Gates Foundation awards $69 million in grants

by Wela 6. January 2009 17:35

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has rolled out its first round of grants in a much-publicized effort to double the number of low-income students who earn a postsecondary degree or credential by age 26—an increase of about 250,000 graduates each year.

The grants total $69 million to more than 20 organizations that include policy organizations, training and research organization and social and education institutions (See story, right). Foundation officials said the awards reflect the foundation’s commitment to use data to shape its investments by building on existing successful programs and policies, tapping innovation in areas where there has been limited success and, over the longer term, bringing the most promising practices to scale. Several of the projects will focus on community college students.

The foundation will first work to build commitment among key policymakers, educators and business and community leaders to increase postsecondary completions rates, according to program officials. Grant-funded work will begin to establish an evidence base for change through awareness-raising research and reports, like “Measuring Up” (see Page 10), and the development of policy recommendations to drive greater access and completion.

Additionally, given the nation’s economic challenges, foundation officials said it is critical that young people learn the skills necessary to prepare them for new jobs. Investments in research and best practices will begin to give educators, students and policymakers a better understanding of which postsecondary degrees produce the biggest returns in the labor market.

The foundation will also invest in efforts that ensure the postsecondary education system can support increased completion rates in two- and four-year colleges. A critical barrier to postsecondary success is the poor preparation of many incoming students and the ability of colleges to adequately address the problem, according to the foundation.

Nearly half of all college students require some remedial instruction, a number that rises to nearly 60 percent in community colleges. This often delays student progress and limits completion rates.

Foundation investments will be aimed at accelerating success in remedial courses in community colleges, including a grant to MDC, a research and policy nonprofit, to build on successful pilot programs within the Achieving the Dream network of two-year colleges. MDC will also support data systems in up to five states that will publicly track and assess remediation education performance in two- and four-year colleges.

“The Achieving the Dream network of colleges has made significant progress in developing innovative programs designed to improve remedial education, some of which show real promise,” said Jamie Merisotis, president of Lumina Foundation for Education. “We will now be able to scale up the most promising of these programs in order to impact more students and begin significantly increasing completion rates.”

Finally, the Gates Foundation will invest in initiatives to offer young people the financial, social and academic support to succeed in college. For example, MDRC will work over four years to grow and evaluate its Performance-Based Scholarship Demonstration at two- and four-year colleges.

Initially piloted in Louisiana, the performance-based program will grow to four areas around the country and give students cash and other benefits to enroll in college full-time and maintain a minimum grade point average.

The Top 100 PC Tech Innovations of All Time

by Wela 5. December 2007 00:26

The Top 100 PC Tech Innovations of All Time
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/the_100_greatest_tech_innovations_of_all_time?page=0%2C0

Found this few minutes ago ... and it seems pretty interesting.

USB is titled as the top innovation. Right at this moment I have a Bluetooth Mouse, my Windows Mobile, Thumb Drive, External 500 GB Hard Disk and my USB Fridge (will tell ya'll about this later) plugged in. So i have no doubt .. USB deserves to be on the top. It's good to see Windows XP in the 5th place. Also there are 9 other innovations in this list which are from Microsoft.

In the 12th place there is the Mouse .... but its not looking fancy like the mouses we see today .. have a look at it.

Anyways I couldn't find the selection criteria or anything related on this. But the list is awesome ... it'll give you a quick peak at the history.

Supercomputing Expert Daniel Reed Joins Microsoft Research

by Wela 11. November 2007 00:18
Microsoft Research accelerates efforts in high-performance and multicore computing.

Daniel A. Reed will join Microsoft Research as director of Scalable and Multicore Computing, reporting to Senior Vice President of Research Rick Rashid. Reed is an expert in high-performance computing, multicore architectures and scientific applications, as well as a leader in U.S. information technology research policy.

Reed is the director of the Renaissance Computing Institute, a major collaborative venture of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, North Carolina State University and the state of North Carolina. He is also a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), and is the current chair of the board of directors of the Computing Research Association, which represents the interests of the major academic computing departments and industrial research laboratories in North America.

“Multicore processors represent one of the largest technology transitions in the computing industry today, with deep implications for how we develop software. At the same time, the emergence of software as a service creates new R&D needs for very large-scale datacenters for service delivery,” Rashid said. “Dan brings to Microsoft Research the kind of vision and expertise that will help us unleash the potential of software for these new computing paradigms.”

Reed is one of the world’s leading experts on parallel computing, large-scale system design and related domains. As a member of the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee he chaired the subcommittee on computational science, which produced the report “Computational Science: Ensuring America’s Competitiveness.” He also co-chaired the 2007 review of IT research by PCAST, which produced the report “Leadership Under Challenge: Information Technology R&D in a Competitive World.” While director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2000 to 2004, Reed was chief architect of the National Science Foundation’s TeraGrid, a nationwide open-computing infrastructure for science and engineering research.

“Two great forces are reshaping computing: multicore processors with unprecedented power and the explosive growth of software services hosted on megascale data centers,” said Reed. “There’s no better place than Microsoft Research for me to explore next-generation hardware and software designs that address these fundamental technology challenges.”

Fantastic 4 ...

by Wela 24. May 2006 23:14

Well! This is not about the movie. Just an idea.... We all know that Vista, Office 2007, IE 7 and Media Player 11 are in the pipe. Currently I'm using all 4 beta versions. Even though there are lots of bugs at the moment it really feels like these 4 are going to be a kick ass combination.

Vista: resource utilization is bit high though, but MS claims that it will run on any machine that can afford Windows XP, let’s wait and see. However I think people will pay that extra buck to go for a better PC and experience the kick ass glass stuff and many other cool things in Vista. Office 2007: What can I say? Over the past 10 years Office applications have changed the way we work in our day to day work. I think Office 2007 will take that to a new level of user experience. But for most of the users there will be a big learning curve. But I don’t think that will be a big issue. Exciting new UI will be the driving factor for them to put some extra effort to learn the things. IE 7: Compared to the previous version this is a big enhancement, but if compared with Opera Browser that has more features than IE. So it’s up to us to choose. Media Player 11: I think it’s too early to say anything about it. Beta released couple of days back looks only like a UI enhancement for the version 10.

What about the Resource Utilization? Memory, HDD etc?
If the same question was asked about 5 years back, I would definitely have given a different answer. May be something like... 'how on earth are we going to machines to run all these software' or 'looks like Microsoft has gone nuts, are they gonna give machines to run these'. BUT now things are in a level nobody bothers of spending couple of extra gigs to install an application.

I’m pretty damn sure that my machine can afford to run any of this stuff . Because it’s powered with 3.06 Ghz Processor, 4 Gig RAM, 256 MB VGA, altogether 660 Gig Disk Space, DVD Burner and a 17” LCD. Once a friend told that I’m nuts to have a machine like that. Another friend asked how I became that rich to afford something like that. Well! That’s a good question. Rich ... ME … naaaahhh! not even close to at least think about that; Secret is I have a ‘Wela’s Computer Renewal Fund’ which I allocate some money almost every month, and also a portion from all the freelanced projects I’m doing. So at the end of some time slot I have cash to get a new PC without any problem. And the next attraction is a Duel Core (may be quad), with 4 Gig RAM, couple of TB of Disk space, 1 Gig VGA (will be available when I’m going to buy the next machine), and most importantly a big ass screen … may be a 30”. What the hell am I going to do with a machine like that? Do coding, play games, of course Movies … and what the hell ... Enjoy the feeling.  Right at this moment I think only a half of the required funds are ready and I have more than 1 ½ Years to fill the rest. Anyways no clue about how the pricing will be. Hey! Any of you buddies want to contribute

a small start with big hopes - Sri Lanka IT Pro User Group Started

by Wela 7. April 2006 00:12

Yesterday we started the Sri Lanka IT Pro User Group. Special thanks to Gateway for providing us the Auditorium to host the event. So every month first Thursday this is going to happen. It's good to see a head count of 20.

Ruwan did two sessions, one on Windows 2003 R2 and the other one on Exchange Server ... new MVP Imran could't make it to the meeting. Unfortunately for me I couldn't digest most of the things he talked about. But i'm sure most of the IT Pro guys understood those because the feedback received was really cool.

itpro1.jpg  itpro2.jpg

Hope we'll get all the support from the memebers like we get for the .NET User Group. We are going to need it :)

Vulnerabilities ...

by Wela 9. January 2006 02:14

Cyber Security 2005 Summary: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB2005.html#Windows

Information in the US-CERT Cyber Security Bulletin is a compilation and includes information published by outside sources, so the information should not be considered the result of US-CERT analysis. Software vulnerabilities are categorized in the appropriate section reflecting the operating system on which the vulnerability was reported; however, this does not mean that the vulnerability only affects the operating system reported since this information is obtained from open-source information.

This bulletin provides a year-end summary of software vulnerabilities that were identified between January 2005 and December 2005. The information is presented only as a index with links to the US-CERT Cyber Security Bulletin the information was published in. There were 5198 reported vulnerabilities: 812 Windows operating system vulnerabilities; 2328 Unix/Linux operating vulnerabilities; and 2058 Multiple operating system vulnerabilities.

Total 2005 *reported* vulnerabilities:      5198

   Windows OS:          812
   Unix/Linux:         2328
   Multiple OS:        2058

And Linux fans are still saying Windows is full of vulnerabilities. ha!. Number of vulnerabilities in Linux is almost 3 times higher than windows. But in the enviorenment it looks like windows has most number of vulnerabilities, because majority uses Windows. Even though Linux is full of vulnerabilities still those are not that popular because only few are using Linux compared to Windows.

Hey Manzi ... thanks for the info.
